Space Jam Trading Cards Featuring Michael Jordan
The entertainment world is starting to buzz with anticipation of the new Space Jam 2 movie that will be coming to screens this summer. The new movie stars Lebron James and the rest of the Looney Tunes cast.
The sequel follows the original film, which starred Michael Jordan and was released in 1996. It was a big hit at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing basketball movie of all time.
It will be interesting to see how the new movie compares to the original and how successful it will be. I'm guessing that the ongoing pandemic will damper some of the box office numbers. Although, I think it's also being released on HBO Max.
Following the success of the movie, Upper Deck came out with a set of Space Jam trading cards in 1996-97. The set was comprised mostly of base cards with a few inserts. Cards that feature Jordan are obviously the most sought-after. However, the "animotion" cards (similar to the Sportflics/motion cards) also hold decent value.
I'm also interested to see if a card company will release cards for the new movie. I'm guessing that they would be pretty popular with both sports card and non-sports card collectors.
I still have a few base cards from the Upper Deck set, but no inserts. I think I used to have more of these cards as a kid, but I'm not sure where they are now. See some of my personal collection below.
